Step by step.

  1. Any 5 gal. bucket will work for this project. Just be sure it’s empty and no longer contains even a tiny drop of a horrible acid that could drip out and burn a hole clean through the Earth’s crust. I saw a movie like that once, gives me the willies just thinking about it.
  2. You will also need a healthy supply of quality duct tape. Don’t cheap out on this step. Good tape makes for a good drum. Although not an endorsement, we do have a certain preference for DUCK brand duct tape. It’s available in a variety of colors, so be creative.
  3. You’ll start by using your duct tape to create two strap loops. These are formed by pinching the tape.
  4. Now, use additional duct tape to secure the strap loops to the bucket.
  5. Further reinforcement is advised. Imagine how embarrassed you’ll be if your drum falls off during the big anti-everything rally. People WILL point and laugh.
  6. This next step is completely optional, but you’d be a fool not to do it. Restrain the bucket handle by using a piece of duct tape to attach it to the side of the bucket. Another option is to remove the handle, but then your bucket couldn’t be used as a bucket after the drumming is done.
  7. Now you’ll need a strap (sling) to carrie this bad boy around. The strap can be createsd by running two long piecs of duct tape back to back. If you elected for two colors of duct tape, you might want to go with two colors for that “I’m so much cooler than all-you-all” look. The strap should be run through the strap loops and then its ends should be taped together.
  8. Final step, decorate your protest drum. Hard corps protest drummers often use permanent marker on their drums, but we recommend a more versatile system of taping paper messages to the side of your drum.
