American Drumline Heroes
During the American Civil War, boys under the age of 16 served in both the Union and Confederate armies: most played the drum, fife or bugle.
The music these boys made was used to introduce regiment activities as well as for pure entertainment. The boys also helped their units by cutting hair, carrying water and tending to the wounded.
We’ve collected stories on a few of these shining examples of greatness: Please take the time to read them. These boys are alumni of our fraternity – more importantly, each is an American Hero.
Fast Fact: 32,000 Union drums were ordered between 1861 and 1865
