1976 George Washington Quarter
Few in the marching community have been as honored, by so many, as has the drumline.
One shining example of this reverence for drumming is the United States Bicentennial Quarter.
In 1975 and 1976, the U.S. Mint produced the Bicentennial “Drumline” Quarter. The coin was created in celebration of America’s 200th birthday. The reverse side of this icon features a colonial drummer, rope drum and a victory torch circled by 13 stars. One star for each state in the Union when the Declaration of Independence was signed.
The coin was designed by master engraver, Jack L. Ahr. His initials can be seen under the arm of the colonial drummer in this United States Mint image.
With the approximate life span of a coin being just 30 years, these tributes to freedom and drumline are becoming increasingly rare.
