21 Ways to Kill Your Drumline / band

Before there was an e|drumline.com, one of our guys – while sitting in a business meeting – composed a list of the 21 most destructive things a musician can do to hurt his/her marching program.

When written, it was only intended to be part of a one-time, last day of band camp speech. Fortunately for all of us, one of his young drummers had the foresight to save this bit of drumline wisdom.

Read the list to your drumline. Then, ask your members if they have ever tried to kill their drumline.

  1. Be sure to leave before the rehearsal is over – no matter what the reason: sport, date, relaxation, doctors appointment.
  2. Never have anything to say during meetings; always wait until you leave.
  3. When at rehearsals, vote to do everything, then go home and do nothing.
  4. The next day find fault with your directors.
  5. Take no part in drumline/band affairs, including fund-raises.
  6. Be sure to sit away from your section (as far from them as possible so you can talk things over with another member.
  7. Get all the drumline/band can give, but give nothing in return.
  8. Never ask anyone to join the members in promoting good fellowship and school spirit.
  9. Talk cooperation, but never cooperate.
  10. Threaten to leave the drumline/band if anything isn’t the way you want it.
  11. If asked to help, always say you haven’t the time.
  12. Never read your bulletin nor listen to announcements, you might find out what is going on.
  13. Never accept any responsibility or serve on a committee. It is much easier to criticize than to do things.
  14. If appointed to a group or position, never give any time to it; let the staff do it all.
  15. Don’t do anything more than you have to do, and when others willingly and unselfishly use their ability to help the program, howl because the drumline/band is being run by a section or clique.
  16. When a section strives for success and is achieving it, always scoff at them because they work so hard.
  17. Always second guess the directors.
  18. Never practice your part, you are better than the rest of the drumline/band.
  19. Set high goals, then don’t work to achieve them until the week before they must be achieved.
  20. Criticize others often but accept no criticism from others.
